Provably Fair, and What It Does Not Prove

Provably fair is the mechanism crypto casinos use to let you check that a game result was not chosen after you placed the bet. The maths is sound and the check is real. The name promises more than the mechanism delivers, so it is worth knowing exactly where the guarantee stops.

The sequence

1. Before play, the casino generates a server seed and shows you its hash — a fingerprint that reveals nothing about the seed itself.
2. You supply or accept a client seed. You can usually change it.
3. Each bet uses those two plus a nonce, a counter that increases with every round.
4. The result is derived from that combination by a published algorithm.
5. Afterwards the casino reveals the server seed.

You can then do two things: hash the revealed seed and check it matches the fingerprint published beforehand, and re-run the algorithm to check it produces the result you saw.

Why the commitment matters

The hash is published before you play. A hash cannot practically be reversed, and no second input produces the same hash, so the casino is locked into that server seed before it knows what you will bet or what client seed you will pick.

If it later swapped in a different seed to change your outcome, the revealed seed would not hash to the published fingerprint. That is the whole guarantee, and it is a genuine one.

How to actually verify

Most provably fair casinos expose the seeds and a verifier in the game or account settings.

1. Rotate your seed pair before a session. That closes the pair and reveals the previous server seed.
2. Copy the revealed server seed, your client seed, and the nonce for the bet you want to check.
3. Hash the server seed and compare it with the fingerprint shown before the session.
4. Re-run the algorithm with all three values and compare the result.

Third-party verifiers exist for common game types, and you can run the calculation yourself.

🔴 Verify a random bet, not only the ones you lost. Checking only losses tells you nothing about whether the sequence as a whole was honest.

What it does not prove

This is the part the name obscures.

• Not the house edge. A provably fair game can be verifiably fair and still return far less than a regulated slot. The mechanism proves the result was not tampered with, not that the odds are reasonable.
• Not that you will be paid. Nothing here touches withdrawals, account closures, or bonus terms being used to void winnings. Those are where disputes actually come from.
• Not the whole casino. The mechanism usually covers in-house games — dice, crash, plinko. Third-party slots run on the provider's own RNG and are not part of it.
• Not that anyone checked. The proof is available. Almost nobody runs it. A casino relying on that is still relying on trust.

The honest summary

Provably fair removes one specific way a casino could cheat: choosing your result after the fact. That is worth having, and it is more than a licence alone gives you.

It does not address the failures that show up in real disputes, which are almost entirely about money leaving the platform rather than about the game outcome. A casino can be provably fair and still not pay you.
